This seems odd to me. I have six auratus. One went through the color change, 'reversing' the female colors and appears to be the dominant male. Another fish took on a similar color scheme, but more subdued. I assumed this was a non-dominant male. However, it appears this 'guy' is holding. I've had African cichlids for around 15 years, but not much experience with auratus. I got the impression from a web site dealing with Malawi cichlids that a female will sometimes take on male coloration, but how common is it? Any Fishboxers with similar experience? I also have gotten the impression that a lot of "auratus" commonly available may not be auratus but either other Melanochromis species with similar coloration or hybrids. Comments?
