  • Blunt trauma?

Late Thursday night my petro fry were sleeping and I turned the light on to clean up a bit, but as soon as the light came on the fry began darting around fiercely. One of my little guys dinged the side glass, and it was immediately evident that his equilibrium was thrown off. Since then he was unable to hold himself upright, listlessly floating in the current. I caught him and put him in a breeder net to observe him. His condition deteriorated over the next 24 hours and I found him dead this morning. Needless to say I will not be messing around in my "fish room" anymore after the lights go out.

I'm confused because, even after his accident, he was eating fine in the breeder box. All other fish are healthy and eating. 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10-20 nitrates. Is it possible that this guy had some kind of blunt trauma injury from ramming the glass? If so, could the immediate change from dark to light have triggered this? If not, my only other guess is swim bladder. What do yall think? Thanks in advance.

All of my fish will go "ape sh*t" crazy if it's dark and I suddenly turn on the lights and approach the tank at the same time . I don't think you have anything to worry about.....it was just one of those unfortunate freak accidents .

I usually turn on the ceiling light for the room to wake them up before flipping on tank lights. After 10 min I turn on lights and turn my room light off

Sorry to hear man, but probably a one off. I had a Copper band butterfly that I had for 6 months and had gotten it eating frozen food like a champ, and then one night he freaked out and broke his beak ramming into the tank glass and/or the rocks. Found him dead in the morning. Happens

I figured I wasn't the only one this happened to. Thanks for sharing, Roshan, and sorry to hear about your butterfly

                Sorry to hear that Austin.

All my fish behave the same when the light suddenly turned on. I have all my tanks on timers, but my guess is when the timers is on, they would freak out the same. Except that with timers, hopefully they would get used to the light turning on around the same time everyday. At least that way, I'm not around to witness the trauma incident and don't feel guilty about it. LOL.
