  • Electric Blue Acara

Ok, ya'll can beat me over the head if I need it. Sooooo "IF" and that's a BIG IF, I decided to, could I add a few of these to my 75gal already bizarre mix?

I had never seen these until recently and they're soooo pretty.

I know I know, I swore no more fish!

I'm even thinking about setting up my 10gal in the bedroom with something. What's wrong with me?!

Acura are South American fish. They don't get real big. All I can say is give it a try.

Really??!! I thought sure ya'll would get the whip out, I was already putting on body armor! LOL

I'll have to set my QT tank back up, IF I decide to get some. How many would you go with?

compared to what i remember you having already (acei and blood parrot), the acara will be less aggressive. they can get territorial when breeding, but otherwise pretty chill.

if you get some just make them similar size as your other fish, and possibly a few of them to discourage one getting singled out and picked on. the process is always the same, introduce and keep an eye on the newcomers

Man, you all sure are a lot more laid back than one of the cichlid forums. I know they'd be getting out whips AND chains. LOL

Really! It's your tank. Who am I to tell you what to put in it. What's the worst thing that could happen? You could loss a fish or two? We never like that but it could go the other way too and every one works out.

like troy said it is your tank.

some people are real stickers to bio-types, and never mix. must have this sand, must have these rocks, etc. some will discourage mixing africans with CA and SA. its your money and your house

i only discourage things if it is bluntly wrong to try and place two species together. like hey i want to put neons with my africans...no the neons will die. otherwise if you like them, and the fish can feasibly work, you can try what you want

Blue Acara is a beautiful fish. They are fairly peaceful and endemic to water that is fairly lower pH than African. I wouldn't recommend adding them to your mix. I believe the African gang will beat them up sooner or later and kill them. As mentioned by other, you can try to add them but monitor them closely. I believe it's best to set up a smaller tank for them.

The only smaller tanks that I have right now are 10gal.[bummer] Do you think our water is too hard for them? I think my main concern would be the acei and socolofi.

good point. in the wild, yes their pH is lower i agree. but if they were born/raised here then they probably have adapted to the higher pH levels.

i kept SA/CA with africans before around 8.0 pH without issues, but there were usually the larger varieties (like JD and green terrors). the acara are smaller and could be a hit or miss.

People have had success with breeding them in Houston water, so I don't think water is a problem.

Yes, they're like that on one of the cichlid forums. If my acei and lab do spawn I would be told to immediately kill the fry.

Obviously I'll try some crazy mixes but I would want to be told that I'd be making a big mistake if I did such and such...

No you don't have to kill them. Just leave the momma in the tank, and the gang will take care of the fry problem.

They really didn't like me having the kuhli loaches and emerald cories. Especially the cories with the socolofi. They didn't attack me, but they weren't happy about it.
