I haven't completely written them off my list, but I do prefer a smaller adult size. I hope yours have a long, healthy life for you to enjoy.

I went there yesterday and they had 2 of the large ones left. I didn't buy any. I was looking for potential breeders and these guys, actually I think they were both female, didn't look like they would make good breeders.

Did anyone go to T&T? How is the store? It's about 2 minutes from my house, but I've never been...

You should check it out. It's a very nice store. I go there once in a while to check out some rare Tangs.

For educational purposes what was it that you didn't like? I'm sorry you went all that way for nothing. I know there was a 3rd one, was it gone?

I haven't been yet, but I want to go soon. That's where I got my first puffer. The store is always so clean and the staff is nice.

The sales guy told me he sold some the night before so that left those 2. Good question. When I see large adult fish I wonder if they aren't someone's retired breeders. Those fish are probably old and looked a little worn out. They have been through some difficult times lately! When I am looking for breeders I look for fish that have not reached their adult size yet. This way I know I have a young fish. Those 2 acaras would make nice pets but I think they would not be good breeders. Another aspect to it is that the chances of getting comparable males to pair up with those 2 females is pretty slim. But if I was looking for some cool fish for my s/a tank I would strongly consider those 2. I think they would look better in a few weeks of a well balanced peaceful environment.

Even though I didn't buy any fish, it is always enjoyable to go to city pets.

                    Very good point!

Side note: that is why I feel hesitated to buy wc fish because I don't know how old they are. LOL. Besides you have to pay a lot more for them.

Thank you for such a thorough reply. I didn't know for sure, but I thought they looked a bit rough. Poor babies, I hope they get a great home.

I did feel real sorry for the big birds.

I always get fish that are small because I hope to have many years with them.

Absolutely! But if you buy a fish that is 1/2 to 3/4 grown then you know you have a young adult. WC can be good if you want to introduce new blood into your breeding colonies. I wonder especially with africans just how close these fish are bred. You buy 30 fry from a breeder and they may all be from the same parents. Then you grow them and they start breeding. There has to be a point where the fry are inferior in some way. But I don't know when that might be. But introduce wild caught and you have strengthened the blood lines in the colony. I have an angel spawn and most of the fry are not able to swim correctly. I think this is because the angels are too closely interbred. I will try one more spawn and if I get the same results I will sell all of them and recommend that they not be bred! These are those "blue" angels we were talking about last week.

Keep the females. Sell all the males and buy a wild male for the ladies.
