cichlids

20150811_174329.jpg I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong thread. I don't know much about cichlids but I know many of you here are experts when it comes to cichlids. I wanna know if this fish would make a good tank mate for my Oscar.....thoughts?

I am no expert when it comes to African cichlids but I do know a lot about SA cichlids. Your Oscar Is a large SA cichlid. It will get much to large for the tank he is in. He or she Will not like the African cichlid and The African may kill the Oscar.

It looks like a Socolofi. It might work if the Oscar is about the same size. How big is your Oscar?

looks more like a blue lab mbuna to me....i have one similar looking in my tank (sold as an assorted mbuna). about 5 inches in length but thats where they max out.

i agree oscars get massive, so you usually need a large setup. nothing is for certain. they may coexist for ok for a little while but its a gamble either direction. the africans are a lot faster and still aggressive if fighting for territory. i have seen them pick oscars sides to pieces.

Ok thanks for the feed back...just an idea. The Oscar is nearly 6" the other ones around 4". I know the tank is only a 30g but it is a corner tank so it makes a little but of a difference. The Oscar was getting too big for my sons 37G y'all tank so I took him off his hands. I'll keep them How they are now. Thanks agian

Socolofi is an Mbuna. The most aggressive Mbuna in my experience. I used to have one and he won't back down to nobody regardless of size.

Ha!....my luck! He's another that I got from my sons tank. Funny this is is I have him in a community but he don't seen to bother any of the smaller fish at the moment. I really wanna do a species only tank so I may go strictly with the cichlids and out the remaining fish from this community in my planted 55

I've had a socolofi for over a year now and while he's the meanest guy in my tank he's yet to kill any one, knock on wood. LOL I like him a lot. Grumpy as he is, if a kuhli loach gets in his way he will bump the loach with his nose instead of biting. For some reason he likes my female blood parrot a lot and hangs with and follows her around.

Yep, grumpy is the right word to describe him. My socolofi didn't kill anybody either because they all got out of his way.

Any idea on what species you will do for the 55?

if mine is a socolofli...he is pretty chill in my tank. slight chasing of less dominant fish, but never a problem. i have a hybrid yellow lab and a male bumblebee that essentially govern the tank

I think they all get out of his way is the best way to describe mine. He doesn't have to bully because they all swim the other way lol...I'm not sure on the species only tank yet I just really want one. I love the shellies but could go with the mbuna

I love shellies. They are great choice but they would mostly use the bottom column only, so a 55 will look empty most of the time. Maybe add some cyprichromis for the middle and top water column.

Ok cool, ya I didn't think about that, I guess as long as there good tank mates its cool. I gotta make a trip to the lfs and see what's available this weekend

I think they would be good tankmates. They pretty much ignore each other.
