  • Just Curious

Like the title says I'm just a little curious about something. Back when I first joined it seemed the only topics of conversation where about Petrochromis now it seems you can't even find anyone keeping them. Just wondering what happened or is this the natural ebb and flow of fish keeping

I'm wondering the same. I think a lot of people still keep them, but they are just being quiet.

I think a lot of the Petro keepers are oldschool and not fond of technology, moved away, or got out of the hobby. Plus the tank requirements are pretty strenuous and the fish can be crazy expensive

Yep, petro are not cheap, and they requires big azz tank. 300g+ is norm that i've seen.

If you are to keep a colony of 20 of these wild giants, that is $4K just live stock.

Issue with petros, is most of the ones they bring in are smaller. Trews, Famula, Fasciolatus, etc. And only the Trew is highly sought after. The macro variants are somewhat popular but they are mean. Moshi and Red Bulu are most popular but some people have flooded the market with them. Don almost did it on his own. The shipping costs on them are crazy expensive, because customs charges per box. Not many fit in one box. Blue giants aren't $200 each if you find the right person. I've seen them as cheap as $75 per. But that depends on the importer. Last year, I shipped Sunny's wild colony of 18 fish and it took 8 boxes. That was absolutely crazy. But not all petros need huge tanks. 6 ft is the magic number with the smaller ones. Even the macros are good in 6 ft tank. Moshi too.
