  • Who am I?

I was sold this fish as Julidochromis transcriptus from an online dealer, and have never questioned it until recently. Does this look like J. transciptus to you?

While I am at it, what fish is above the Julidochromis in this picture? (I'm questioning everything now)

There is no way to tell this for certain, but does anyone have an idea as to what variant of O.ventralis this guy looks like? Regardless, he is beautiful... if a little aggressive.

I see that problem in a lot of LFS as well....all are labeled Transcriptus when some are clearly not.

      Re: Who am I?

I've been thumbing through pictures on the web... and marlieri and transcriptus both look like plausible answers. Should I believe the name that it was sold to me as?

Are you thinking it might be closer to a marlieri? or maybe even a cross breed?

I think they look close to a Julidochromis transcriptus....

How old are they? Maybe their coloring can change a little with age.

              Tim,

I have two different clutches of Julidochromis marlieri that I have bought from people both here on fishbox (GHAC swap and sell) and my original 4 came from the HAS auction the seller was Dave at Dave's Rare Fish, San Antonio.
Your fish and my fish look identical -- I just sat for 10 minutes in front of my 58 which holds them and then looking at your pictures.
They look identical.  I have found online them to be Julidochromis marlieri Magara or listed as Julidochromis marlieri Burundi.

Now I am not 100% saying they are, but being that they where sold to me from two different clutches and most likely not from the same set of parents I am guessing with other online pictures I have looked at this and my fish are Julidochromis marlieri for sure (99.9% sure)

                Re: Who am I?

                Tim,

The only picture of the Ventralis in my "Back to Nature book by Ad Konings" shows it to be a Blue Ventralis, Mpulungu.
This is the closest I can find for this fish.  If it truly is that then the face may at times turn a little darker blue (like the face of a tropheus Dub) and the "eye" on the gills will blend in with it.  The color you show right now is the "non spawning" colors.

The only places I see you can buy this sucker is online and wild caught..  I dont see it available any other way...

the one picture of the juli and the fishie above it...Tim that's no mistake a peach face brichardi from the Cedar Point Gang of cichlidfan's...as for that other fishie with the long fins under it ...dunno......
but i will add that all your fishies are soooooooooo healthy looking no matter what they are....

I'm gonna have to say Juli. Marlieri.

If you google the two and look through the bulk of the pictures they resemble more Marlieri than Transcriptus and having owned Marlieri they look similar to me.

It looks like the Neolamprologus Pulcher daffodils I have.  But could very possibly be a Neolamprologus Brichardi.

What was it sold to you as?

IrkedCitizen - I got them as Neolamprologus brichardi. I have two males in one tank and a female in another.

We just bought a pair of transcriptus from Fish Gallery this past weekend and they look the same as your fish in the picture only minus the yellow tint that shows in some of your pics.  I am a little confused myself now?! LOL
