  • Question about Tangs

I've kept several of the smaller tangs over the years but never kept fronts...or trophs for that matter. I have a couple questions...

Can calvus coexist ok with fronts? Can any smaller tangs? I thought trophs might be able to but was told they had to have a species tank. Do they?

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

    Re: Question about Tangs

Calvus makes one of the best tankmates to go with Fronts. As long as you get one big enough that it wont fit into the fronts' mouth.
as for trophs, they are herbivores and shouldn't be mixed with calvus or fronts (carnivores). I've kept all of them before, but not an expert.

      Re: Question about Tangs

I wouldn't put Trophs with Fronts.  Trophs need a very specific diet -- veggies only.  Also, Frontosa really like their caves, and Tropheus thrive more with rock piles.  And Frontosa are so mello, where Trophs are pretty chaotic.  I'm thinking the Frontosa would end up being pretty stressed out with all the darting around the Trophs do.  There seem to be more reasons not to do it than reasons it might be okay.  I can't think of a single reason it might be okay actually.  :)

        Re: Question about Tangs

I would never keep Trophs and Fronts together.....some people do it and say it works but knowing how the two differ when in a sp. only tank I would never do it.

As for keeping calvus with either....calvus are predators which will hunt fry, I like to see fry in my tanks, but as long as the calvus will not fit in the front's mouth like h0nkzz stated you would be fine with either as long as you are not interested in fry.

Calvus can coexist with fronts.  Most smaller tangs can coexist with fronts (as long as they are not to small like the others have said).  Fronts will almost eat anything that fits in their month.

Tropheus can also coexist with fronts.  Feeding NLS to both will resolve the diet issue.  As EK said, "some people do it and say it works..." I personally wouldn't do it but if you had your heart set on it.....it can work.  Regarding fronts, the cyphotilapia gibberosa mpimbwe are known to be a little bit more outgoing than other variants.  I have read reports and seen them act like puppy dogs in the tank.  Always moving and always happy to see you.  Again, personally I wouldn't do it, but if you want to....try  it and keep us updated.

I wouldnt do Fronts and Trophs together either...just too much of a different personality and completely different existance in the lake level wise.
