OK, i dont what it is but it keeps coming back. It smells as if something has died and is rotting, or like really old water with a funk to it. Maybe its brown algae but i dont know. I clean the tank and do water changes but it comes back. I used sand on the bottom of there tank just so yall know. It forms on the floor almost like clumps of moss or layer of clouds almost looks fluffy like but it matches the sand very well, you couldnt tell it was in there unless you were up close looking at it. If it is disturbed along the bottom, its just plain gross because its floats in the water like stratus clouds. In the beginning everything is ok but it seems to come from no where. I am wondering if is the uneaten flake food that rest along the bottom or to much O2. Please help, I dont know what to do. The smell of the tank or should I say the water is sickening. Oh ya, the fry are yellow labs... It happen in the small 5g I had them in, and again in the ten gallon, its like clock work...it just keeps happening

Re: HELP... weird stuff keeps forming in fry tank
What type of sand is it? How long has the tank been set up? Do you have any scavengers in the tank? What inhabitant are there?Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Re: HELP... weird stuff keeps forming in fry tank
I think it's from overfeeding. The food is sitting on the bottom of the tank, if it's flake food it will get that fluffy look and any food will have that funky smell. If you add a scavenger and cut back on feeding the problem should go away. A friend just had this happen in her tank a few weeks ago. Your situation sounds just like hers.A house without a puffer is not a Home.

Edmlfc, I was thinking the same thing about the overfeeding. I feed the fry about 3-4 times a day because it is alot of them.
