  • Re: 200 gallon Tanganyika tank

I love my FX5 - I was a little worried because I had not been too satisfied with the other canister options that Fluval provides. Althogh I have never had an Eheim 2260 to compare, I wouldn't change my FX5 for anything in the world. Love it alot better than my Eheim Pro II .

My only complaint is the disconnects from the canister.

Gotta remember the Fx5 could be damaged by sand where the Eheim could not...

That is one definate issue with the FX5.  The pump is at the bottom, so all your solids settle out and can get into the pump suction.

The Ehiem 2260 and 2262 the pump is on top, so all the solids have to make it thru the media and defy gravity to get into pump suction.

I haven't taken any precautions with mine. But I don't have any fish that substantially mess with the substrate (hence the plants). The cyps spawn in the upper parts of the water column, and I have a small variant of Julidochromis. Are you planning on taking any extra precautions with your filters, Geoff?

In the 300 the intakes will not be near the bottom, the fish going into this aquarium I dont expect to do much digging.

The intake on the FX5 has some really large openings.  ARe you concerned about fry getting into the filter?

I thought about putting some kind of screen on the thing. What about you?

Concerned? Yes. Do I plan on doing something to stop it? not at this point in time. I may rig up a large, coarse sponge to go over it in the future. Fry could certainly get sucked up that thing.

What about the good ole' panty hose over the intake trick?? That might keep them out. The only thing would be if they could swim away if they were to get sucked up to it. Just my two cents.

I'm tempted to toss in some of my yellow lab fry by the filter after I put panty hose on to see if they are strong enough to swim away.

If they are not, I can just turn off the filter, If they are... then I have the problem of catching a tiny little cichlid in a 210 gallon tank. Hmm... any other thoughts to see how well the panty hose would protect fry from getting sucked up?

I thought about using some of the 20ppi foam from Rena and cutting it to fit in there.

Black Pantyhose might be too fine to use.

yeah the foam would be easier for them to escape since it would not be directly on the intake depending on how thick you place the foam cover. of course it would be easier for him to seperate them and have the fry grow in seperate tank, of course that would mean another tank and i think that puts him past his limit
