  • tankmates for breeding pair of Neo. savoryi?

i have a breeding pair of Neo. savoryi in a 4ft 55gal, along with 5 Juli. transcriptus which are miserable and will probably be coming out soon, and 6 zebra danios. what can i throw in the tank (preferably Tanganyikan) that the savoryi won't throw a ****fit against? also, what are the best LFS (or any breeders?) for Tangs?

should i replace the danios with Cyps?

Nice looking fish, wish I could help, but I know nothing about them....maybe a calvus....?? I hear they can hold their own pretty good...

Yeah, some Cyprichromis leptosoma would work. Just be sure to get some non-Jumbos like Utintas.
      Nice pictures by the way.

Alex, those guys are members of the Brichardi complex. If they behave like their cousins, and I've kept Brichardi and currently have daffodils, tankmates will be hard to find for a breeding pair. In both species, the breeding pair killed everything in the tank but the yoyo loaches...including the other members of their species. If Tim says cyps will work, then I'd be inclined to try them, but I'd have another home set up for the cyps just in case. Just MO, but those are mean little bastiges. Nice shots of your savs.

I currently have cyps in with breeding julies and brichardi in a 55. They do get chased sometimes, but seem no worse for the wear. All I can vouch for is my experience. Mileage varies. I'd probably take out some of the rock on top if you intend on adding the cyps.

LOL Tim. Maybe I shouldn't feed mine raw meat.

i like to do lamp types in single species setups.had good luck with savoryi in 20L's.i think you will struggle to find fish they will tolerate when they are in a family way.i've mixed cyps with lots of different(tang)fish,it works 30-40% of the time.if you cant get the savoryi alone, its worth a shot.let us know what happens.good luck.

Re: tankmates for breeding pair of Neo. savoryi?

thanks for all the advice everyone!

                  tim,
in your 55gal, are the julies and the brichardi both breeding, or just the julies? my julies are all at the upper corners of the tank (except one, who has found a nice little cave that the savoryi cannot fit inside), and though their fins are intact and are otherwise in fair condition, i know they are not happy in the least bit. the savoryi have claimed the entire tank. i guess there are no cichlid species that i can realistically add...

i added the zebra danios as dithers and it made a huge difference within minutes; before the danios, i was lucky to see even just two fish out at the same time! i would like to add Cyps to keep it a Tang tank, but i'd also much rather pay $1/ea instead of $25/ea.

maybe i'll add another six zebra danios for fun. what do yall recommend for cleanup crew? i'd guess mark would recommend yoyo loaches, but what else have yall had luck with (that won't munch on too many of the fry)?

                  thanks again!

Re: tankmates for breeding pair of Neo. savoryi?

Actually I have 2 pairs of Brichardi and 1 pair of julies all tending to fry currently in the 55. I added the brichardi after everybody else was established and didnt move any decor.

Most people will recommnend Nerites or BN plecos as a cleanup crew... but I have a Chinese Algae eater in the tank that does a pretty decent job (he was a rescue).

Zebra danios would be a safer choice.
