  • My WC Black Moba Momma

I strip my wc moba mommas at day 10-11 usually.  The last 2 spawns for my black moba momma have yielded around 22-25 fry so I decided to try something different.  I stripped her on day 6 last nite and she gave me 42 eggs!!!!!!!!  And she had another 8 that were crystal clear (not viable) for a total of 50 eggs.  Her best clutch has been 35.

They are tumbling very well and right before I netted her, I noticed another of my wc moba mommas with a mouthful on day 1.

No, I'm thinking about growing them out larger..........to about 3"-4" and selling them them for a bit more.  I'm even thinking about starting to ship these larger sizes out to fishkeepers around the country that have been asking me to sell them fry and juvies for the last 3-4 years.

It's hard to get good quality F1's these days.  The prices are still quite high and when you add shipping.....they get to be quite expensive.  I believe in feeding them top quality foods from day 1 so they can be healthy and have that great coloration mobas are known for.  I still have 3-7 customers on a wait list for the regular mobas.  I have 1-2 folks wanting the black moba momma fry.....most of these are out-of-towners that are now willing to make the drive into Houston since gasoline prices have come down.  As long as the customer demand is there, the prices for mobas and other exotic fronts will stay up there.

I pre-sold all 20 of my reg F1's that will be ready later this month without a problem.  An out-of-town customer that wanted 10 of my F1's from my black moba momma backed out unfortunately due to the loss of his job, so I have 25 F1's from my black moba momma that are over 1" now and I'm going to grow these out.  I'm keeping them in my floating nursery until they hit 2 1/2" or so and then release them into the 180g.  I have 2 F1 juvies that are about 2 1/2" and 3"+ swimming with the colony now and they are really beautiful.  The larger one is a blk moba momma baby and has better coloring than most of my wc moba adults.

I haven't figured out a price.  Early last year, I sold 4 F1 regular moba juvies about that size for $80 each and folks were asking for those juvies for several months after I sold them.  I might just sell the F1 regular moba fry at 1" since I have 2 wc moba mommas that spawn pretty regularly.  I'll strip the wc moba momma that's presently holding eggs in about a week and her fry should hit the 1" mark around the first part of January.

I'm going to keep the 25 F1's from my black moba momma and grow them out.  I'll most likely do the same with her last spawn of 42 as well.  In another few months they will almost double in price.  I have grown out as many as 30 juvies in my tank with the rest of the colony with no problems as I have plenty of caves and hiding places for them.  Juvies are super quick as well.

The great thing about growing out fry/juvies in my 180g is that customers buying 1" fry can see what their babies will look like in a few months with good care and food.
