Naah I have seen his 90.. its got two nice rock piles and the ikola look great in the tank... With a 2/6 ratio I am thinking he is okie.. Potentially what he should do is add another 4F and he would be in heaven :)
What fish do Jesper have 180 WC T. Moorii Chilambo +1 Petro trewavasae.
110 Cyps, WC Xeno Spilopterus Kipili WC/F1/F2 T. sp red Kiku

Well perhaps in a text book maybe, but as Jesper said, that's not the case in this tank. Its nothing I've purposefully done, but they all seem to get along. The alpha male has set his dominance and the beta male is not a skirt chaser.
I would like to add up to four more females, however, its all a matter of money though.
The Moliro we have are some F1 fry we're "babysitting" for a friend.
But back on topic - yes, I would love to have a 135 gallon tank full of WC adult Ikola!
You are also normally told that you need to keep a group of at least 15 individuals to keep aggressions down. I did this for a long time until I came across this guy in Denmark and I was blown away by his tanks. He was able to not only keep but to breed something like 5-6 variants in two 70 gallon tanks. The smallest working breeding group he had was a pair. Can you believe it? A pair of Tropheus? They didn't cross breed either he said and I have since seen quite a bit of his results and I believe he was right. Just think of it, people are using entire basements to breed the six groups he had in his bedroom." by Fredrik Hagblom.
This is how I feel about it. And I can't say it as good as Fred can so I deffer.
You think his pair will breed for you? or better yet... you think you can go out and find a pair to breed babies from?
Yes it works for some but again its not ideal and how many loses you think one has to go through before a pair is formed and kept successfully?
Not saying it doesn't work... h3ll we have gay male couples with babies.... again its a way around it and obviously doesn't work in all cases. But for one to greater their success what's ideal?
Buck the system and sometimes you get away with it.
MJ, you are saying less works... what happen to your old colony?
I have kept 6 mpulungu adults at a 1:1 ratio and yes it worked....although aggression was high it was not detrimental but I saw that it was a time bomb waiting to go off.
I mean if you can do whatever it takes to avoid then why not? You think bloat happens overnight? There are things that lead up to it and aggression is one of the strong players... funny how I hear a lot of the guys that lose fish to simple diseases/problems preaching.
My $0.02... not a tropheus king or scientist but I can say I have never lost a single battle against bloat even when I went looking for it.(mpulungus were bought with bloat and cured with metro).
I knew what I was getting in to when I added them, if I wanted to saved them I would have. I didn't change the rocks, didn't turn off any lights, none of the stuff that would have helped and even then I still didn't lose them.
You saw how one was cowarded to a corner when I redid the rocks at my old place.... you said it wouldn't make it cause when yours did that they would end up dead...well you saw for yourself that it worked its way back in to the colony. The two I had were not dead.... whooped to $hit but still eating fine. I removed the two, vented and made a decision for the two. They were not the nicest males of the groups so it was a simple answer.
Why? Didn't care. I got 4 more females to my colony to total 41... now I did lose one of the new males and one of the small old males which I got to watch put on one mean fight show but I did gain a gorgeous new male which fathered quite a few mouthfuls and possibly one of the reasons why I'm having so many holding now.
Totalling different scenario once again MJ....
I lost 2 out of 43 which I knew I was gonna lose to begin with and didn't really care.
You were losing one every week out of what... 14? and was stressing about it to no end.
Read the article before... its a good one. There are plenty others like it that say you can buck the system which I love reading.... why? Cause it puts some end to all those "seasoned experts" out there that are quick to say something.
You know that I myself am a believer of things not written in stone. I do 100% water changes and feed like I'm feeding a tank full of oscars.
When everyone said NLS was the root cause of bloat I increased the amounts I was feeding to test it.
When people said water changes are bad I went and did more. (You know this one)
When everyone said having too much filtration is unnecessary I tripled it and have experienced nothing but happiness!
eating... except popeye but shes looking better.
one of the female from you were doing the nasty all night and seem to be holding. we'll see if she holds. she sure like my alpha. lol
