  • Petrochromis Famula Chimba

Ok, so I recently acquired 21 F1 Petros (I will post pics ASAP).  They are about 4 inches long each (give or take an inch).  The males are coloring up very, VERY nicely.  I have them in a 215 gallon tall (6x2x2.5) tank.  They've acclimated well and three males have taken up territory in the tank.  One is especially territorial and will not let anybody on his side of the aquarium.  He is the smallest, meanest, and most colorful male of the three.  The females and subordinate males are basically just corralled into a corner of the tank, but seem to be doing fine.  There is a lot of shaking going on everywhere... hopefully breeding signs and not just male on male action.  Eating very well on NLS.  My question is.....

How well will the majority of the petros do (18 of them) being that they aren't really allowed to do anything but swim up and down the wall so they aren't in any of the 3 males' territories?  I've heard a lot about the aggression of petros and this is my very first colony - I don't want to be losing fish until there is just one left like the stories that I've heard.

Try to put some taller rocks in there.

I had the one spire in the center that really helped ALOT in keeping the line of sight down in the tank and the fish were able to spread out a lot more.

Can you post a picure of the setup?

I tried to spread and build up rock as much as possible in their tank.  I am not so sure that the other 30 trophs in the tank helped, but the Petros were just starting to dominate and take control to the point the Trophs had pretty much stopped breeding and were getting banged up.

That tank is good footprint for them, just not sure what all 21 will be like down the road.  Might have to go in the 300..

Thanks, Geoff.  I will take a pic tonight and post.  The decor is somewhat tall, but I guess it could be taller.  Keep in mind it's a 30" tall tank.  Did I mention that the dominant males are looking AWESOME?!  I may move these guys to the 300 as they grow larger, but I gotta a lot of malawans to move if that happens.... not really looking forward to it.

        In a 6ft petro tank I wouldn't have 3 territories.

I wouldn't do that for a colony of trophs either.

Ever since I broke my scape into two good-sized rock piles, the breeding with the trophs began!

So, you guys are saying that three territories are too close together in a 6 ft long tank and that I should redo my rockwork to form only two territories spaced further apart?

THEY'RE COMING!!!!  Just bought 60 nerites and decreased the length of "sunlight" in my algae-infested aquariums, so pics will be following shortly.  The petros are doing very well.  They eat WAY too much!!!  Only one female is still holding although they breed like crazy after each water change (just like trophs).  Still need to change my scaping to reflect only 2 rock piles (advice from the experts) - gonna be a big change from 5 males colored up and holding territory....

Sorry this took so long guys and gals.  The glass is dirty and my camera skills aren't the best.  I took a bunch of pics with most of them coming out fuzzy or just plain bad.  I have a Canon G7 and I think it's supposed to be a decent camera, but I don't know how to use it very well.  Anyways, I tried to get pics of the whole tank, the holding females, and the most colored up males.  Let me know what you guys think!
