  • ? about Feeding NLS

i am going to start feeding my Mixed Malawi Tank NLS 1mm cichlid formula.
my question is when i feed the NLS, do i need to presoak it?
and if so how do i do this?
i am asking because last time i fed this food to my Mbuna, i didnt soak it, and my 2.75" Male Cyno. Afra 'Hara' came down with bloat and died   i was just wondering if i soaked it would it be better and easier for them to digest?

I feed it to my cichlids just like it is, but i'm sure if you wanted to, you could soak it.
Fish are people too, they just have gills.

I like to watch certain fish of mine swell up shortly after they gobble up their NLS.... :)

I feed the nls straight from the container to my tropheus. I don't pre-soak them and have not problem so far.

well....depending on how much food is consumed, it's possible to see some bloating due to food swelling inside the fish. I have a couple fish that do swell quite a bit after they eat.....I've never noticed it with my Dubs though....

My Paratilapia juveniles swell up quite a bit after feeding time.  I feed them Dainichi baby sinking pellets...

Did you slowly acclimate the fish to the new food?

no, not really.  I think Dave said he was feeding them flakes when I got them.  But I had bought Dainichi food at the auction, so that's what I fed them.  They did fine...

Feeding too much and the fish had poor health if it bloated.

I feed NLS to all my fish and I have never had a problem with bloat to any of my fish. I definately don't think you need to presoak for Mbuna. I got a little 2.5" Demasoni that eats 3mm without a problem.

i feed my trophs NLS right from the container.....they love it and haven't had any sick or swell up since i've had them......i feed them spirulina flakes too.....
i don't overfeed my fishies....they get fed once a day....and every other week i have them skip a day......i'm really scared of overfeeding them and bloating them....have been doing this ritual since they were tiny babies.....no losses yet......

                          thanx for all the advice
i got the hara on a wednesday, and fed him NLS on thursday, didnt slowly acclimat, all other fish handled it great and loved it. but the hara and acei didnt take it well, and both got a severe quick case of bloat  they died in 2 days, i got both of these fish from the same place, which is a place i go quite often for africans :?  dont know, maybe i just got the lemons of the batch :?  :(

2days to die from bloat sounds like a pre-exixting problem.

                              Re: ? about Feeding NLS

If your fish are not adjusted to eating a more nutrient dense pellet, and you also may not be so experienced at feeding that kind of food...

You should always acclimate slowly when moving over to a pellet food.  Like 2 weeks.

If they are already used to eating pellets, and you know how much to feed when using a pellet, then no problem switching most pellet brands.

You should pre-soak all pellets when your switching so you can see how much the pellet swells in water.  This way you can adjust how much of the pellet you feed them.
