It’s important to appreciate that not all tang cichlids are the same, and not all plants are the same either. Most aquatic plants will not thrive in the alkaline water conditions required by tang cichlids. This quickly reduces the selection of possible plants, but the good news is that there are still a lot to pick from. Generally speaking thick leafed Anubias species and Java Fern will work with practically any set up.
i have found a wide variety will work in my Tang setups, Hygro does pretty well, so does Val. also i kept Crypts in my sand as well and it does just fine. as long as you dont plant stuff near where they are diggin, or keep fish that dont dig much, like Cyps, then i have never found a problem at all.

I've kept tangs in planted set-ups for years and have them now. As long as you don't try keeping herbivorous fish with plants they typically do fine together. Up until the last HAS auction I kept Daffodils in a fully planted setup. I traded them and bought two types of julie which went into planted tanks. My water is typically very hard so the plants that do well in my water do well with the tangs; anubias, crypt, val, sag, bacopa, blyxa, java fern, java moss, red temple...and several others.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.
