  • Holy dead malawi's batman

so I wake up this morning to find 3 of my malawi's dead.  My acei, my aurutus, any my eye biter all bloated, on the bottom of my tank.  On top of that the synodontis I had in my SA cichlid tank was also dead, stuck to the filter stem.  I don't know what's up.  I just did a water change yesterday.  I know fish die all the time but this was unusual for me as they were all still sub-adults and I've never had a cichlid die on me before.  Has anyone else ever had a bunch of africans die before after a water change.  I'm really worried, is there anything I should look for.  All these guys survived with no power for over a week after IKE just to go out like this.

Sorry to hear about this.  I think Taipan and Krisvalkarie had similar problems in very recently.  Could be the city water, they may have done something different.

Don't trust the water company.  They poison the water to make it safe for us to drink.

When they have problems their solution is to add more poison.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Most likely the water that you added had stuff in it that was not good for them.
What do you dechlorinate your water with ?
I would get some carbon into your filters ASAP and start filtrating the water for impurities before you have more deaths.
(this is when you want to have fshfrks dual carbon bottles on hand so you can do a water change asap using a carbon filter to refill your system)

I know where to recycle them!! :)

They sell the 3 gallon jugs, we could get 3 or 4 each for the big tanks.....

                  Re: Holy dead malawi's batman

Several years ago, I was in the middle of my regular water change, and fish started jumping and some floating to the top. By the time I noticed it, it was too late. I found out later that the MUD had some kind of malfuntion and no one noticed since it was Thanksgiving holiday. I tried more dechlorination, but it was all over within ten minutes. I was told later that they think the chlorine level was as much as ten times the normal amount!

I lost all of mine. It was a sad day.

I hope you don't lose any more. Good luck.

                        Re: Holy dead malawi's batman

                        sorry to hear that

alot of this has been going on lately

i put dechlorinator right after i empty tank, before putting water back in

havent had a problem with it,

however i tend to use over the recommended amounts on labels just for good measure

sometimes when using prime, i still add stress coat just to avoid these types of problems

sorry for your and anyone else's losses

the thing about water conditioner is u almost cant use to much, i always add enough amquel + to treat my full 125g  water volume, not just the amount taken out, as i am filling back up, i have a mesh carbon bag full of marineland carbon,  that i fit over the end of my python as i am filling back upp just to make darn sure.   you can never be to careful when it comes to our little finned friends.
