  • lost fish =(

so yea, came home all happy an hour ago after hanging with the friends only to find my tank looking empty. upon inspection, i found 2/3 of the fish on the bottom barely breathing and 1/3 of them dead. it was due to the drop in temp of the water. i had instructed my brother to add
new water for water change 5g every 2 hrs with total of 10g but i guess he poured all 10 in at the same time. right now i added 2 more heaters to the tank and hopefully the death toll doesnt keep going up. never assigning tasks of importance to my brother again -_-.

    current death roster:
WC Inkfin Calvus (brought home this afternoon)
    2 2" frontosa moba
    2 1.5" frontosa burundi
    2 3" brichardi
    3 cories

all 500 of the brichardi fries.....

i feel like crying right now. ='(

55g, and yea small tank for fronts. it was temp housing for them and the calvus. =(

Are you sure it was a temp. drop that caused the deaths? 10 gallons of a 55 gallon tank is a little less than a 20% water change.I have done much larger water changes with straight cold water from tap and I have never had any problems. Did your brother use a dechlorinator?

im 100% sure since it was a 100w heater and the water to be changed was tested to meet all reqs before i left.

I'm curious, what is your average temp in your tank/s in the winter?

sorry about your loss, but something does not add up, i also think its more than just a simple temperature fluctuation from less than 20% water change, are you sure your brother gave you the full story :)

Have you figured out what killed the fish ? did your brother add dechlorinator to the water he added or just to the tank ?

I only use a heater in one tank (my puffers) and all my other tanks stay in the mid to upper 70's all winter/summer.

I dont use a heater either and i pour in 20% cooler water durung a change and never lost a fish in my 90. I keep the house around 75 so i guess the weter temp is the same. something else may have killed your fish. On the other hand my 29 droped to 70 deg 1 morning cause the heater died in the coldest room of the house. All those fish got ich and died. whats weird is all the fry that here born that day are still kickin

i must add, the 90 has a submersable pump that adds heat.
