Need to be more specific about the species... there are tons of FW eels available.

I'm guessing you mean the "FW Moray Eel"

        Read through the forum links.

Most say they can do fine in FW but will be short lived and once they mature will need brackish.
The tank size requirement thing I think is based on the average tank size for those that do not do frequent waterchanges and the tank size would sustain the fish for that time and with enough room for it to move around.

I don't ever read much of the care sheet, just look through for the few basic info like collection point and the like.

There are some smaller Mastecembelid eels that are truly freshwater and can work well in smaller tanks. As to the freshwater moray, I have seen many in fish stores, but all the ones I have seen inn home tanks seem to dwindle in health as they age. My guess is that they venture into estuaries/fresh water as young and eventually move into more marine enviroments as they age. I have read that some were able to keep adults in higher end brackish for long term, but have never seen this in actual tanks. Good luck and let us know how it goes, I'd love to hear some real keepers opinions on their care and viability when kept long term.

Iv kept these for a few years. Seemed to do perfectly fine in my old 55. Did some basic homework. Keeping one in pure Fw not advised, id add some aquarium salt. Cover ALL HOLES ON TOP OF TANK
                "A must"
Food , allways fed mine feeded goldfish. And when he got bigger in the 2 foot length iv gave him live im crayfish for fun and that was an awesome show!! When kept fed and happy they come out more and are definitely more active and lively. Give them a good cave and a few rock piles. NO SMALL TANK MATES. They will get eatin when u least expect it!

the puffers are two fig.8's about 3" and yes they are curious. So maybe the eel wouldn't be a good idea. their curious nature would get them killed.
