Have you ever noticed plecos swimming fast to the top of the water? They breath air too!

I had a cat that would go fishing for plecos, try eating them, realize they were hard and unappetizing and then leave them out in the sun to bake. I would find them all bruised and hard looking, and put them back in the water and they would re-hydrate and be fine. I don't count out a pleco as dead very easily. Plecos have also been known to move from dried up puddles to deeper water sources. Their thick scales help them survive dry conditions really well.

And yep, plecos do come up to the top to gulp for air. Corys do it too
