  • Goby and hillstreams

Finally got my gobies and hillstreams out of the Q tank and into the main tank. They quickly made themselves right at home and are eating the repashy mix.

The gobies are Stiphodon semoni. There are three species of hillstream; Gastromyzon scitulus, Gastromyzon zebrinus and Sewellia lineolata.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

They look nice, Mark! The hillstreams steal the show for me.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I have always wanted some hillstreams but I was told that you have to have colder than normal water in the tank as well as a fast moving current. Is this completely true?

They are more comfortable in cool water; below 75 degrees. During the day in summer the tank gets up to 78 to 80 and they seem to feel fine for the short warm period.

I love to watch the hill streams especially when they claim a rock as theirs.

nice, i can understand all the publicity over this type of biotope tank. i missed the update on how you solved the powerhead heat problem that was happening with the stream manifold

The original fluval sponges on the intakes were too fine and clogged very quickly. This caused the flow to slow way down and the powerheads to heat up the water. I replaced the sponges with coarser sponges and the flow through the powerheads is much better. The temp during the day rises to around 78 or a tad higher. Overnight the temp drops back down to around 75. I rinse the intake sponges weekly during water change and clogging isn't an issue. I also added two air curtains and some air stones along the back wall. The additional flow and surface agitation seems to cool the water. I get a little more evaporation but not too much. I think the combination of the new sponges and evap are working together to keep the temp from getting too high.
