That is a good flow rate for African cichlids or Geo's but 5 to 1 would have my Altums and Discus sucked up agiast the pick up pipe. Not all fish need or can take that much flow.

Yes, not all fish can take flow. African love high flow. Tropheus requires 10:1.
For slow swimmer, you can go another route: small flow rate and longer contact time. A sum is a good example of this case.

I would take into consideration the purpose of your filtration.
Clean tank, clean look needs mechanical filter.
Breeding tank, healthy fishes need bio-checmical filter. I have seen a lot of dirty tanks but fish keep breeding.Real plants play an important part as bio-chemical, so no need to add a lot filters.
so its good to have both kinds of filters.

Since you mentioned this, my uncle tank is a 75G. He has a 30 gallon sump and Eheim2211.
The tank looks filthy with waste at the bottom. He hardly change water (maybe once a month), but his fish (green terror and some other African peacocks) all look nice and fat. They seem to love that water. Beyond me!!!

Think my turnover is about 3:1 on all my tanks. I don't think filters are meand to clean the dirt from the bottom (not in my tanks that is) but mostly to clean the water where it comes to nitrogyncycle and fine particles. Syphoning once in the two months I think and they are quite stabil. No diseases aso (fingers crossed).
Btw : spawning isn't always a sign of wellbeing !!! Species will even spawn in the worst conditions just for the survival of the species.

Filterratio with big fish as you guys keep, will definitely be needed higher.

Dirt on the bottom doesn't say much about waterquality. As long as good bacteria are there, there won't be any issue.

Only think is waterparameters worsen the wrong bacteria will take their chance and cause infections aso.

I think you are right. His sump is working very well as far as good bacteria capacity.
