So did you ever sex yours before you got rid of it? I am just asking because I am seeing ways online and then I "test" my self by looking up other threads about sexing them and try to sex then before I see what everyone else thinks. However when I do that the answers I read are mixed unless it is an obvious male

I never sexed mine. Look up planetcatfish. Their cat-e-log. Is one of the best.

I've looked and it only says males get more hair on their pectoral find and face, while females are bulkier from looking above. I have also heard that females can still have hair just like males and subdominant males will give off female like traits

No one said it was easy. I know in other types of plecos sub. males look more female but after time you can tell they are just sub. males. It takes time to see all the little things. If you do this you will learn.

Alright cool I was checking some stuff at pleco planet out, and seem to see a reoccurring theme that there is usually a dominant male in the group that will show definite male characteristics, and once that male is removed another male with start to show those same characteristics assuming there is another male in the group. Could I possibly put them in the the 40B and one by one take the males out as they pop up? And then once I have a better idea of my ratios put the ones I want breeding back in and either sell or put the others in another tank?

As long as they all have a place to hide. 5 or 6 will be fine. You could remove males but you really don't need too.

I mean like remove the males as they show dominant traits just to get a count of how many males I have. Then when I narrow it down to only females put the males I want to breed back in the tank

And what size pleco caves should I get? And should they be circular, oval, or rectangular?

The size and shape don't matter as much as just having enough. Each fish needs a cave.
