  • Plecos and artificial driftwood

I have 2 L201 inspector Plecos in my tank currently. One of my main decorations is a large piece of artificial driftwood (poly-resin), though I am in the process of trying to sink 2 pieces of driftwood I got from HAW. Is there a problem with having this fake driftwood piece in there with the plecos? Would it better to only have the real pieces in the tank or are they smart enough to know the difference between the two? Thanks in advance for the valuable advice!

They do know the difference. They will love the real thing. They don't mind the fake. L201 are more of a meat eater. Mostly they just like a good place to hide.

i have just some common plecos and an albino chocolate. they are not wood eaters, but they take to the natural driftwood more than the artificial ornaments. i see them cleaning the natural wood more often. but when it comes to hiding places, they take what they can get. doesnt matter if its artificial or real from what i see. if it provides cover they like it.

Thank you both! I know the L201 is a carnivore, but John at HAW suggested I still get some real driftwood for them. All my fish love the artificial driftwood and the plecos have found soooooo many hiding spots in and around it. Some days I can't even find both of them! I checked the driftwood in my bathtub last night and only the very end of each piece still floats, so I may try to add them to the tank tonight after I get the new bubble wands installed!

Dont do it. the wholes in the bottom which are nessecary for the fake deco to sink, plecos love these and i have had ~15 die in various types of fake wood,. real wood is about the same cost as most poly resin pieces. the resin itsself is safe, but the posisbility of getitng lodged in without escsape is very real.

That's some funny $#*! right there.

Big is right if there are holes big enough for them to fit in they will go in and some times never come out. But it's already in the tank.

Sorry, I couldn't resist! I'll check the piece for holes but it's sitting on gravel so they seem to be pretty well covered. Thanks for the heads up though!

i only have one ornament left with a hollow center, and want to remove it ultimately. i never lost a pleco to this problem, but i did notice a previous pleco going in and taking a little while to exit. the current pleco cant fit, but i agree thats a possible problem.
