  • best place for carbon.. wet dry or cannister

I have a 125 Gallon tank with a wet dry/Mag 7, and 2 Eheim 2217 cannisters. If using carbon, would it be more efficient in a cannister, or in the sump? I have heard arguments for each, and even if it's worth using at all. Just looking for some experienced users as to their opinions.

    Thanks

I am keeping a variety of Tanganykans.

When used in the canister the contact time or efficiency will be greater.

When used in a wet/dry it will be easier to access and replace.

+1 Ek. I put mine in my sump for convenience. What I do is wedge the carbon bag between the opening of the two chambers, pinching the top of the bag off between the bottom of the bio-media chamber and the coarse sponge where it slides in. This forces the water to pass through the carbon bag before entering the return chamber.

I know this doesn't paint a very good picture but a bottle of red wine is inhibiting my left brain tonight.

the reason carbon works is that it has little tiney pores and the bad things get trapped in the pores. The more water your can force through the carbon, the faster the carbon will plug-up and need to be replaced. The larger amount of carbon you can use, the more pores you will have and the longer it will last.

A canaster will use less but need to be changed more often.
A wet dry will need more carbon to do the same job but it will last longer.

What bad things are you trying to remove and how do you test for them ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

how important is carbon to filtration for the most part i just run bio/bacteria and mechanical/sponges, floss, filter pads and dont really do much chemical filtratin/carbon. i was curious is the chemical filtration ie carbon really that important?

Not really important unless you need it.

I don't use carbon in my tanks and never felt the need to unless it was to remove meds.

I do use purigen but for other reasons then what carbon can provide.

+1 Ek. I use ammo-carb because I don't have as much filtration as some of the other keepers here and it helps keep my levels down those last few days before my next water change.
