The magnums seem to have poor magnets on them as well.
The Vortech is an awesome pump! I am waiting on a second unit for my 125g. They have so many functions out the box it's unreal and the $130 battery back up option is great seeing that it will run a 3200gph pump at half speed for approx 30hrs.
If you plan on getting it go to City Pets. They are offering the Mp40w for $419 but you get a $30 gift certificate with purchase.
Thanks for the tip on City and the Vortech. Is that cheaper model at $300 which I was told was adjustable that much of a step down from the $400 item. Is the more expensive model adjustable on flow?
Both share some features and size but the Mp20 lacks Night Mode and wireless capabilities. Also it puts out 1200gph less.
I put a single Mp40w in my 6ft 125g and after seeing the effects on the water quality and fish personality I went ahead and got a second. I imagine for your much bigger tank you would want at least one Mp40w instead of the Mp20.
In the ads I've read on the Mp40 and 20, they always say rated for glass. I dont think they are rated for being placed on acrylic. Did you happen to read that in any of your instructions?

Yes, it's due to the heat from the motor being on the outside and having no way of dispersing. It works just fine on Acrylic though and think the disclaimer is geared more towards the smaller or thinner acrylic tanks.

I guess you could put a small piece of glass between the magnet and acrylic to help disperse the heat if that was a concern.
