  • Tank Trim

I picked up a tank this weekend and it was FREAKIN HEAVY! :icon_hang: While we were loading it on the truck, the plastic trim on the bottom broke.

Does the plastic trim provide any kind of structural suppport to the glass or is it just for aesthetics? Would there be any issues if I used silicone to just stick it back on?

The trim does supply some structural support. You don't say what size the tank is, how thick the glass is, or were the break is. You may be able to silicone it back on with no problem. It is important that the bottom of the tank is evenly supported. Two examples I have had happen last time I moved I setup 30 gal breeder, 18X36 on the bottom, on the "flat" floor and the bottom cracked because there was a little twist to the tank. 2. I had a 75gal split a bottom seam near the middle because the stand it was on sagged. The bottom did not break because it was tempered, which is 3x stronger than untempered glass. If you could post or send me a picture of the damage it would be easier to say what you need to do to fix it.

Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the tank because it's sitting at my inlaws. It's a 300g tanks with a 8x2 footprint. I would guess that the glass is 5/8in think, but that's just a guess.

The trim cracked on the corners and when the tank was moved, the trim came off. We put the trim back in it's place, but have not secured it. I might look into replacing the trim if this is possible.

If you use the right solvent, the repair will be invisable and stronger than before.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

That's right about the solvent but use the wrong one it melts. If it is a Oceanic you can forget about new trim they don't sell it. The trim in this case should be ok to silicone back on it is the vertical support that it gives. The silicone holds the glass together. Just make sure the glue back on is even just enough to get it to stick.
