eartheater, UV sterilizers have their uses. Traci made some good points. They are not, however, necessary for a healthy tank. In 41 years of fishkeeping I've never had one on a tank...installed a couple for ponds to help with algae, but never on a tank.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

the entire reason i ask this, is because my tank is in my bedroom, and is kinda near window, i have never had algae from this, but just wondered if it would be benificial in any way.
        thanks for your help:)

The UV will only zap the free floating algae or "problem" that is in the water column.

          If even that.

So, they get rid of green water...hmmm...

I was also told in another thread that they get rid of cyanobacteria. Has anyone else tried this?
