Has anyone ever figured out a way to clean the top part of the intake tube? I'm talking about the part at the top that has the two 90 degree bends. I can clean my filters to almost new condition but I have not figured out a way to clean that one little 4" section.:aua:

Nope. I use a toothbrush to clean the intake and can't get that section either. A large test tube brush might work but don't know where to get one. I would love to find a solution. Because sometimes it gets so clogged that it won't run like it's supposed to. :furious:

put it in a tank with nerite snails in it... and put one in the tube and let it sit overnight.

they'll do the work for you!

just make sure there aren't any fish that will get stuck in the tube in the tank.

I drop mine in a 5g bucket of weak bleach solution and let it soak for 24 hours. Looks like new when I pull it out and rince it off.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I use essentially the same thing as algarciajr.

Trumpet cleaners work well too. They make them for a variety of musical instruments... but since I played the trumpet...that is what I had laying around.

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Those flexible brushes work great, like al and Tim showed. You can also make one with some string and pieces of scrubber pad tied on, pulled back and forth through the tube. Some wet sand shaken back and forth inside will also knock a lot of the nast out of the tube. Remember though, some of that stuff clinging to the inside of the tube is biomass from beneficial bacteria, so clean as new isn't always the best option.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

ok so here goes...I was cleaning mine one day and ran into the same problem when my girlfriend asked what I was griping about. She then made a joke and said...use a tampon...and it worked. just slide it in, add water, and then pull the string the opposite direction and it will pull all the algae out with it. And thats why I keep her around!

Just keep saying, "It's for the aquarium filter, REALLY!" when you go to the pharmacy or grocery store!
