Hard water stains are calcium build up. To desolve the calcium you need acid.
I use "KABOOM" (contains organic acids) but some prefer to fill the tank with water and add muratic (Hydrochloric) acid (available from most swimming pool supply stores) and let it soak for a day or two.

Wear protective clothing, rubber gloves and plastic safety glasses while using acid.
Always add the acid to the water not water to the acid.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I always used a lemon and razor blades. Split the lemon in half... rub it all over the calcium build up...let set for 30 mins or so... rub again with lemon and start scraping with razor blade. Vineger also works just as good.
