    Ok, so the gunk is a good thing and I'll just leave it alone -- even though it isn't very pretty. Do you think it could build up enough so that it would reduce flow through my filter?

      Short answer, no. The water friction will keep the line clear. Of more concern is to keep the prefilter sponge if there is one, and the impeller clean. A dirty impeller will have far more reaching effects than the bacterial buildup in your lines.
      Consider my posts as general information based on personal experiences, and in most cases, far oversimplified. Actual mileage may vary. Don't try this at home. If symptoms persist, contact your physician.
