  • Using Pool Sand...

    Okay beautiful people...

I went out and bought 2-50# bags of pool sand to set up a 100 gals. for the woman of the house. And I want to know if the sand needs to be "prepared" in some way (i.e. gravel should be washed/rinsed b4 putting it in a tank to get rid of the dirt/dust/paint, etc...)?

2ndly...will I have to worry about the sand being pulled into the filter via the outlet tube from the tank?

3rdly...is the sand any different from regular gravel to keep clean...can I use the Python???

    Educate a brother good people!!!

Souljaa - I've never washed PFS. Not had a problem. You will need to worry about sand getting sucked into a filter if the intake is too low or if you have big fish that love redecorating. You can stir up the PFS periodically and even siphon it like gravel depending on the diamater of your siphon. I generally go over the top and only get the fish poop.

startingover - the granule size of sugar sand is smaller

I use pool sand in most of my tanks. I wash it before putting it into the tank. Sand can not be used with undergravel filters. If you are using canister be sure your suction tube is not too low or you will pick up sand into your filter. You can use your python but you will lose a little sand. I not sure what suger sand is. But do not use play sand or sand form Lowes or Homedepot. This is just M/O P.S. depending on what level you are tring to keep you PH, you might want to check out dolamite, its a very good substrate. Butr for the money u can't beat SPF sand

Also... all PFS that I've ever gotten has been from Leslie's Pool Supply. The sand's intended purpose is filter media in pools. It makes sense to me that it would already be relatively clean.

Leslie's pool sand is pre-rinsed before bagging. Reason is that Leslie's does not want a ton of calls from pool owners telling them they got a cloud of sand particles in their water.

Yes you have to stir it unless you have cichlids that loves to dig in it, then you just have to make sure that the mountains are "broken" down at times.

I have never washed Leslie's pool filter sand.

.... and like Arm says... filter intakes have to be high enough, and yes you can use a python to clean the tank.

Alright cool...I did get the sand from Leslie's, so I'm good there . This is an african tank I'm setting up, so I will have to deal w/ some periodic "redecorating"...but nothing to the extent I put up w/ from the big ca/sa fish Only holey rock and sand this time around I will use the "poop-skimming" technique...the intake only reaches to the middle of the tank which is a standard 100g. So I think I'm good there as well
              Many, Many thanks ya'll

Okay...got another question...The lighting on a tank can make or break the tank b/c we know that it's all about the visual. So which choice of lightbulb will totally just set an african tank off...something that will really accentuate the blue hues of the fish, as well as the white sand/rock??? Any suggestions/recommmendations???

welll if you have something that tends to make the sand pop more since its bright afrcans there blue/yellow and all those colors will look good against the perfectly lighted sand

My girl's favorite fish are red top zebras, red top trewavese (sp?), red top hongi, and afras...so this is basically what will be in the tank. You can see she got a thing for blue...

Souljaa -- I dont know what you want to spend for lighting, but today I have found that Africans LOOK awesome under the following color combination.
                            10,000k white light
UV Lighting's 12,000 50/50 Actinic white light in combination (ie one of each or if the tank is big enough two of each lights.)
I recommend current-usa t5 light figure and this will make your fish shine.
