  • staining a tank trim?

So, I was thinking about staining the trim on one of my tanks.

I have stained wooden stands and other furniture in the pass and don't have a problem doing it.

However, I have never tried to stain a plastic (wood looking) trim on a tank before. Has anyone tried to do this?

    How did it turn out?

Do I just use the same stain as I used on the wooden stand?

Thanks in advance for all the help guys.
I ate my fish that died.

you will have to use paint. spray paint works best just use straight even coats :)

      You've got two options.

Option A: I did this with a 75 a few years back. Take the tank outside, tape off all the glass with newspaper. Go to the auto parts store and buy some black auto bumper paint. No gloss, the stuff that's slightly textured and has a flat appearance. I spay painted 3 coats with about 20-30 minutes between each application. Turned out real nice, and the bumper paint keeps it from scratching or flaking. I believe peterp63 has the tank now, ask him, he probably can't even tell it used to be cherry trim.

Option B: Find some scrap Formica of your desired trim color (Yes, the stuff they use on home counter tops.). Measure the length and width of the trim all the way around. Cut Formica to fit. Apply over the trim with a high-bond glue. I did this over the existing oak trim of my 150 and it too, came out nicely.

Both options fairly cheap alternatives for changing up the trim color.
