What brand do you use ?
where do you get it ?
how many gallons does it treat and what does it cost including shipping ?

Help me get more bang for my buck.

Carbon filter. Cost $80 to get it made.. no need for dechlorinatorsetc..
Used to use Amquel, and bought it locally somewhere for about $50.00
Have been using Carbon filter for the last month.. No issues yet and no dechlorination at all.. Its nice to save money

I use Prime, and sodium thiosulfate when the city is shocking the system. I know a lot of folks, including lfs owners, who use only carbon to remove chlorine and chloramine from the water. My only problem with this method, is that you don't know when the carbon is exhausted until you subject your fish to possibly lethal doses of chlorine.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

Stress Coat or Stress Coat Plus.

I order online from either Drs. Foster and Smith or PetMountain.com. Both sites come out to about $40 when you factor in shipping, which is still cheaper than buying it at the one LFS I know carries it in the gallon container.

I've never lost a fish due to chlorine issues (knock on wood), even during the 'unfortunate bleach fiasco of 2006' when a rock was soaked in bleach and introduced to a tank too soon. A water change and triple dose of Stress Coat saved every fish in the tank.

        Treats about 7600 gallons.

Note: Petmountain.com donates 5% of your purchase to HFB if you use the code though.

Because of what Mark said I use Carbon and small dose of Prime probably about half the dose as recommended.

I normally buy the 2 litre bottle of Prime - treats 20,000 gallons. It last me about a year with all the tanks I have, ordered it from bigalsonline July 2008 when they were offering free shipping and paid about $36.

Let me know if you are going to place an order, I am about out and need to get some more soon.

Don't think we'ld save enough on shipping to pay for the gas you'ld use making the 100 mile round trip here to pick it up. )

Amquel Plus has always worked well for me. Some would say that you need a wet dry because supposedly it reduces the amount of oxygen in your tank, so the wet dry is there to compensate for the difference. Cost....homey hook up.

I will be testing my Carbon filter every 3 months. As soon as I see ANY pink tint in the water, I will be replacing the carbon. Just got my report card from my water company. Free chlorine MAX found in my water = 1.25ppm. No Chloramine. I love living where I live !! and my fish do too !

+1 on stress coat. I buy mine at walmart though. I have used the cheapo topfin or jungle brands before w/ little problem.

I currently use Prime. I have also used Chloramex powder with good results.

Prime. I use the 2L bottles, as well. I used to use Stress Coat, but it clogs Purigen so I switched about a year ago.
