I've have used Prime for a year without problems until recently.
I live in League City and the city said in May it was changing from Chloramine to free chlorine.
The Prime bottle says it handles both so I kept using it and I have had some fish death in separate tanks, different occasions, from 60-80% WC: all of my tetras, some silver dollars, red tail shark ...
The other fish survive it but looked sluggished for a day: gold fish, angel fish, cichlids, some silver dollars, platys, cat.
If you live near South of Houston, please tell me what you are doing to save your fish. Thanks.

The problem you had with your fish could not have been due to chlorine unless you used too little Prime. I use heavy concentrations of bleach to clean and sterilize a lot of my fish gear, and then clean it up with Prime. I never have a problem.
How are you dosing the Prime when you do the water changes? What I do is remove the water using a python style water changer, put in enough Prime for the entire tank (not just for the amount of water I'm changing), and then fill the tank with tap water from the water changer.
I do 50% water changes every week. So when I remove, let's say, 40g of water from my 75g tank, I dose enough Prime for 75g of water, not just the 40g.
I do this with all my tanks with no adverse results with any of my fish or inverts.
Something else had to have happened on the day you did that water change. Perhaps the city did something else to the water while it was making the changes?Vicki

I think the chlorine thing was the other way around. LC changed from free clorine to chloramines. All water systems are changing to chloramines by law. north harris co. is making the change next year. going from pure clean water from the evangeline aquafer to the run off waste water of the whole mid of the america continant called lake houston. Every time Dallas flushes a toilet guess what. We drink it and put it in our fish tanks. I say run your water thru a carbon filter and if it makes you feel better add a dechlorinator. JMO200

News Release
Sunday, March 15, 2009
The City of League City Water Production Department is dedicated to provide the best quality water in the nation. To maintain the water quality in our distribution system, the City of League City will temporarily modify the disinfection process used in areas served by the Southeast Water Purification Plant. The areas served by this plant include the City of League City. Typically, chlorine in combination with ammonia (chloramination) is used by our utility for water system disinfection. For approximately a four week period, beginning April 1, 2009 and ending April 30, 2009, the City of League City will be using chlorine without the ammonia. This method of free chlorine disinfection is somewhat stronger and will provide greater protection of our finished water quality.
I have made water change the same way the last year.
I remove 50 to 80% of old water.
Dose 1/2 amount of Prime.
Run a hose from the faucet and refill the tank.
Does another 1/2 amount.
If the tank is 72 G, I do add enough Prime for 72G , not just for the volume I replaced.
