  • How much filteration should I run?

I currently have 125g and it is way overstocked. I plan to run a 125g for atleast 1-2 years until I upgrade to 210+ gallon.

    But for now is 1 x FX5, 1 x AC70, 1 x Eheim 2217 and a large Powerhead good enough?

50% water changes every 2 weeks. 2 days ago (tanks been up for about 2 weeks) I checked the nitrate it was at 5ppm, ammonia 0...

    my stock is:

    1 x Oscar 10''
    1 x Jaguar 7''
    1 x Convict 4''
    1 x Firemouth 3''
    2 x Festae 3''
    3 x Salvini 4''
    1 x Tiretrack Eel 7''
    1 x Blood Parrot 5''
    2 x 2'' Archer Fish.

Believe it or not I planned on getting at least 1 more cichlids...Thinking about a JD. So far my tank looks empty because most of my fish are youngsters.

Is it possible to do a wet/dry without drilled tank? hang over overflow?

Rico would you be able to show me how to use/setup a wet/dry?

wet/dry is the way to go. Your ammonia to Nitrites to Nitrate conversion cannot be beat by anything but a wet/dry.

Do you need to buy a pump for that or a overflow box? I have no idea how to use one.

Okie I listed the 300 because you said you wanted to upgrade to a 215 down the road.. you will be able to use this unit in either one. On a 125 you really only need the 175 or 200.

You will need a pump. Get a Danner Supreme MAG 18 and you can safely remove both your canister filters.

I run a wet/dry (size 400 gallon sized) on my 180 with a MAG 18 as my pump. All I added was two power heads to get more water movement. All other filtration needs are not needed.. I would say the same for you.

Now how does it work ?
You will get with this setup two hoses which will connect to the 2 inputs on the wet/dry and the 2 connectors on the over-flow box. This Box will be put on the side of your tank on your back. The prefilter box is the device that is on the end of the wet/dry.... its only shown there "to show it comes with it" This is the box you put on your back.

You will need to purchase besides the pump, 3/4" hose long enough to reach the other end of the tank from where you put your prefilter box. In the wet/dry you will get the albow joint that the hose is attached to and the albow joint will then hang on the tank just like the return on your FX-5.

What happens in the end with everything hooked up ?
Water flows into the prefilter box. Then over side of the tank using the U-tubes installed in the prefilter. Once the water flows it will start filling the wet/dry up. (you are at this point adding water to your tank basically). When there is a certain amount of water in the wet/dry you will then turn on your pump which will return water into the tank and raise the water level in your tank, then the prefilter box will return the "raised" level of water back into the wet/dry.

If you decide to go this route, I will be more than happy to invite you over to my house to show you how its done or I can come to your place and assist you with hooking everything up.

Its simple once you have seen it once... I promise you.

Everyone will tell you a wet/dry is the way to go (and they are probably right) but in my experience with my 125g tank, you have plenty of filtration. I run an XP3, Eheim 2217 and a couple of Whisper 70's with bioballs. I have 8 good sized Frontosas, 5 adult Brichardi, 5 Juli's, 2 adult Calvus, some leleupi, and 3 very large Synodontis Cats.

From what i've heard, wet/dry's are easy to setup and easy to operate. Good luck.

Thank you for your .02, Zu has convinced me to go wet/dry and I plan on doing it within the next month. I have also had good results with my current setup but I feel like it will be gimp when some of my stock gets a little bigger. For now I am going to monitor my nitrate and ammonia and keep up with the 2 week schedule on water changes.

Yeah I'm debating to keep my FX5 with the wet/dry or just do a wet/dry and 2 powerheads to help improve aeration and debris. Then again I've had bad experience with using powerheads as internal filters, because the sponge gets so nasty it builds ammonia....

                          power consumption is going to be a *** kicking with a FX5 + 1800gph pump.... ~185watt....
