    Foam under tank

    I've seen some people put foam under their tank. I never really asked what it's for, but I assume it's for leveling. When is this recommended and how much does it compress (3/4in compress to 1/8in)?

    I'm setting up a 180g tank over carpet and was wondering if I should put foam under the tank.
    300g - Petrochromis Texas "Red Fin" Longola, Petrochromis Red Bulu, Tropheus Red Rainbow Kansanga.

    The foam does not really level the tank. It fills the irregular spots between the stand and the tank so that the weight is distributed more equally (preventing high pressure points that might crack the glass).
