  • Tunze 6101 - What's your experience?

Anyone ever use these? I have two MP40W's on my 125 and they are awesome, so just wondering what anyone's opnion is on these Tunze's. Sounds like they have incredible flow (more than Vortech's MP40's) -- 3125 gph vs. 3000 gph. I'm currently running 4 modded MJ1200's and K4 on my 300 gallon tank and I'd like to replace all of them with 2 of these Tunze 6101's. They have magnet mounts, as well as a really cool controller with various functions. From what I've read, they're better than the Vortech's because you can actually point these, they have a wider spread, quieter, and more reliable. I don't know how true this statement really is because my Vortech's are great with no problems thus far. I just can't run them on my 300 because they need to be attached to a side overflow and the driver for the Vortechs cannot be submerged in water.

    Anything will help!

Answer this question for me Peter. Do you see a big difference with the added flow as compared to when you didn't have that much flow. Are there behaviors greatly impacted by the amount of flow in the water?? I have been wondering about this for a whilePhung

For my petros I don't see much of a difference. They seem to care less about the extra flow, but with my 300g it definitely can't hurt with the emperors and moshi and trophs in there. The less aggression the better. There's actually still a lot of fighting within each species... although there's always the occasional tropheus chasing an emperor cichlid out of his way :)

For me, it's more to add circulation to the tank to avoid stagnant areas where detritus might collect. These badboys should do the job.

....plus, if I ever switch to marine I'll be set! :)

Also, possibly some tighter schooling with my trophs with the higher flowrates. But, yeah, just adding more circulation for better water conditions is my main objective. Gotta remember, my tank is 8 feet long.

6101 isn't that much more flow than vortech . why not the 6201? up to 5,200 gph.
          25g - Reef
          3.5g - Surge Tank
10g - Ichthyophthirius multifilis breeding colony

Because I got a really good deal on two 6101's with controller and magnet mounts...

you already got them? which controller ? i would put more than 2 6101 on that 300. maybe 4 tunze or 2 tunze and leave some of those other powerheads in there. but if you have the right controller for the tunze you can link alot of them together. tunze have a really good record and alot of the saltwater guys use them alot.

Like I told you, my friend as one. He also has the magnet mounts. He told me and I have seen the magnets don't work all to well. After a while the pump will start to slide down. Plus you got really thick glass where you want to put the PHs.

If you don't have the PHs yet, I say F-it!

Upgrade that eheim 2028 to a 2262 and you got more flow and more media.

he's putting them on the side overflow not the glass if i understand correctly. i hadn't heard that about the magnets good to know.

yeah I know where he wants to put the PHs. I been to his place. But that glass is still thick from what I remember.

My homy has his on a 135g standard 6 footer and the magnet slides so unless Peter's glass is thinner then that it's going to slide I think.

I will work but they are bulky and the flow is more concentrated.... the magnets can be upgraded and honesly if you plan to mount on the overflow I would stick with the plastic over hangs.

Having the magnets submerged might cause long term problems if you add salt to the water.
