recently got this pump for my 125g but its way too strong. i have a ball valve on it but i have to move it almost half way so it wont overfill my tank. is that too much restriction? should i just drill another hole and open the valve all the way?

Never limit the intake the way you are doing it.

I am not a fan of limiting at all but if you do limit, do it on the return, not the intake.

or simply add more down flow to your wet dry, but like Mike said dont limit on the input side.. make it the output side, you are making the pump cavitate.. not good for your pump

well change of plans. i reduced the output to 3/4" pvc and made a spray bar. tested it and worked. i guess it slowed down the return a bit which give the drain enough time to keep up with the pump. will this put too much pressure on the pump?

You will be fine. The pump can handle it, Iwaki's are the best out there in my opinion for external pumps.

There will be a lot more pressure going out the spray bar, that if it was open. The smaller discharge piping will increase friction with that amount of flow, so what all that boils down to is you might see a rise in temperature on the tank. Just keep an eye on it.
