  • Tropheus filtration

So I have a 125g with a FX5, Eheim 2229 wet/dry and 2 koralia 4's. I also had an AC 110 with double sponge's but like an idiot I did filter maintenance under the influence and broke a corner off. I don't know why but I always tend to mess with crap while :icon_jook:. Anyways I would love to hear from the tropheus owners on how they would finish off the filtration. I was thinking another Eheim wet/dry should cover it but I don't have the experience to know any better. Besides throwing manufacturer names and models at me, please give me an explanation as to why so the grasshopper can learn plz.

dude you are sitting pretty nice right now on filtration. A lot of people will suggest you get a true wet/dry for all of the oxygen it adds to your tank. If it were my tank...which I believe it once was ...I would add two aquaclear 110's to it. So you would have the FX5 on one end under the tank, and the Eheim 2229 on the other end under the tank. then on both sides of the center brace I would add a aquaclear 110. this should give you plenty of turnover and the koralia 4's should be plenty of flow in the tank. I would pack one of the 110s with double sponge and only clean it every once in a while. this is the method I use so that I can clean all my other filters really good in the sink and it doesnt effect the bio-cycle cause the double sponges will still be holding a lot of beneficial bacteria.

perfect, I'd leave it just like that.

The only mod I might consider would be to ditch the 2-110's for another FX5 since you broke one of the 110's?? If you can still use it, then leave it as it.

Thanks for the advice. I was thinking 2 of the Eheim wet/dry would = a true wet/dry filter Its almost totally silent. I can't hear it untill I open the door. I also like the fact that its a sealed system so no worries about a big mess. Another thing is that its not a constant flow of water so it seems to create a shoreline type current. That seams to help lift the poo off of the substrate because of the changing currents. LoL i swear Eheim didnt pay me to write this. I think I will add another FX5. Any suggestions on how to fill both of the Fx5's with media? Maybe do one straight bio and the other some bio and leave room for other types of media if needed? Do you guys always keep fresh carbon in your filters?

No I havent. I cant decide on how I want to do this. Scared of F0's because I dont know enough yet. Is there a big difference on diffuculty between F1's and F0's? I would like to find a colony of ikola kaisers but gimme 10 minutes i'll change my mind. I have'nt seen one yet but I have'nt been looking too hard. Where would I go for a colony of lufubus? err those other tropheus with the fins? err whatever I said earlier. I'll take one of each.

If you ever really consider adding another Eheim 2229 I have one new in the box I have never setup and dont really plan too.

All of my FX5's are packed 2-Baskets with Bio-Media, and 1-Basket is fine filtration.

I dont put charcoal in my large filters because of having to change it out every 2 months or so and it's a bit of a drag to have to open those big canisters to just change charcoal.

So.,,I usually have a small Eheim 2217 or 2028 loaded up with Charcoal and change that monthly.

You could load up one of those 110's with Charcoal and change that every 2 months or so depending on how many fish, how often you feed, and your waterchange schedule.

What is the big deal with 1000 % filtration. It seems to be the latest fad lately. My thinking is as long as you are diligent with your water changes , you should be good to go. Don't get me wrong, I still think you should have at least 1 wet dry for oxygenation, but putting 2 fx5's on a 100 gallon is wayyy over doing it.

Yeah, but regular people are not going to blow that kind of money on a tank that size.

However, I don't think 2x fx5's on a 125g as the only filration is overdoing it.
I'm in the process of locating a fx5 for my 75g. I want an fx5 along with my 2217 on my 75g.
I really want to setup another 75g.
I will likely run a wetdry on that tank instead of just canisters.

I was saying instead of having 2-AC 110's HOB's, you could get rid of those, and change nothing, if you added a second FX5 under the stand.

No matter how much filtration you put on the tank, nothing beats weekly waterchanges

+1. You don't really need that much. It's nice to have more. Like you and Geoff are saying.....it's about the WATER CHANGES.

I would get a true wet/dry and sump. Nothing beats the oxygenation and increase water volume. The increase oxygenation will help the tropheus fight off diseases and convert ammonia to nitrite then to nitrate. The increase water volume will help dilute those poisonous chemicals before you do a water change. Getting a bigger sump is more important than the flow rate of the return pump.

Good luck and let us know what you go with.

OK I thought the Eheim wet/dry filter performed just as good as a regular wet/dry besides the smaller volume and less flow. I was thinking by using 2 then the volume would equal a regular sump and oxyginate just as well as a regular wet/dry? If a true wet/dry will totally out perform 2 Eheims then I would like to go that route. I have looked into a true wet/dry systems and diy wet/dry but there is some cheesy looking crap out there. I have never used any wet/dry or installed any so I am hesitant to buy that stuff. So if you guys know a wet/dry system that would be perfect for a 125g troph tank or even piece one together from different manufacturers then i'm all ears. I would like to do this right the first time and I really don't care about taking shortcuts to save money because that always bites you in the *** in the end.
