  • Tank Startup

I think I'll be at a point where I can finally add water to my 180g this weekend. If all goes right (i.e. no leaks), I'll be able to start my 2260 and my wet/dry on that tank. I plan to put about 6-8 Petro's (4-6inches) in this tank and keep it only stocked with them for atleast 6months.

The question I have is around cycling my tank. I've had a bad experience in the past with this so I want to get it right this time, especially since I'm putting my petros in there. Everything I put in this tank will be new (i.e. filter media, sand, water, etc) so there will be no bio-load with the equipment planned for the tank.

I do have an established Eheim 2080 that's been running on my other tank for a long time as well as sponge filters I've stuck in my tank to build BB. Is it sufficient enough to move the 2080 to the new tank and squeeze the sponge filters to add BB to the tank? Will this add sufficient bacteria to the tank or should I just cycle it another method?

Thanks in advance for everyone's input.

why dont you just squeeze the sponge filters and then just put the sponge part in your wet/dry. and have the 2080 run on your tank for while too. I cycled a 125 with just a used sponge in my AC110. I added fish the same day I set it up.

How many fish did you add? Was this for your Chimba colony?

this was when I setup my 135 gallon actually. I added about 12 6-8" SA/CA cichlids that night. never had any cloudiness. along with the used media you already have...you could just buy some of the beneficial bacteria in a bottle and add it as well.

Go jack Jim for some used media. That foo got so many tanks it's not funny.

If you're up NW I'll give you some used wet/dry filter floss. I'm about to change it out.

            Just holla at me.

p.s. 6-8 petos for 6 months might be a bad idea depending on size and type.

            good luck man!

If you are going to keep petros check out Delock's thread. He is parting with a bunch of really nice fish. It is sad to see him go, but hopefully his fish will find good homes.

That 2080 holds a pretty large amount of media. I would think that alone should be enough to cycle you tank

Do we really want this fish to have to go through life suffering from alcohol dependancy?
