  • Cross member is cracked how bad is it?

Just noticed that my glass cross member is cracked on my 75 gallon tank.

The tank is a Oceanic 75 that has been running since 93.

How potentially bad could this be?

Don't need to wake up or come home to a tank full of water on the floor.

Need a picture to see where the crack is at.. if we are just talking about a small crack you can live.
Problem is you got to figure out what made the crack start in the first place.
Problem most likely is because there is stress on the bottom of the tank. Ie its not level.
You need to check how level your tank is from back left to front right and back right to front left.. this is how cracks usually comes from.

      It's level on all corners.

I think it's cat related. We had to rearrange for the christmas tree and there is now temporarily a chair next to the tank. I caught one of my cats on the tank this morning.

I dont think this is a cat issue.. if its a cat issue then there is something else wrong. Unless your cat is like a 100lbs cat.. You have to remember that brace has to take a lot of stress from the water pressure.. a cat does not weight that much.

          Understand.

          Just lookibng at all angles.

the tank has been sitting in the same place for years.

yeah but at the same token it can take years before the stress gets to the fracture point. I would if you have the time, remove the light off your tank, take a level and as best as possible take and see if the front back at the greatest angle possible to check to see if there is a stress point somewhere. Re level the tank as necessary if there is a problem Remember things sag over the years too..

Things moving over the years is right...

My wife and I just moved into a single floor place.... and we can hardly open the back door because of the settling that is going on.... the flooring is cement and is shifting..

The landlord painted the ceiling to cover the cracks.... since we have been here for over two months now... we wonder when the ceiling cracks will be big enough to put our fingers through.....

Zulaab is really quite right in how things shift and what happens when they shift...

              Especially in a 75 gallon...

But am curious... Have you taken a level on top, bottom, vertical sides.

Just my thoughts and experiences on shifting.....
