I have a Eheim 2229 and have not set it up. I would like to one day, but just never have. Most of my aquariums are all 30" tanks and the filter is limited to shorter tank styles 24" and less.
The reviews are so mixed on them, because I think some people may not have set them up correctly.
One of the things that has kept me from sitting mine up besides the height issue, is that as the canister fills and empties, the water level in the tank changes. So to some effect it creates a wave like motion in the tank, but in larger aquairums it supposedly is not all that noticable.

If you find one on the cheap, its still an eheim. Dont count on it being as efficient as a true wet/dry but its still a good filter. Classics + a dedicated W/D is the way to go!

I am using a 2229 and a 2217 on my 150 gallon aquarium, I would prefer a true wet/dry over cannisters myself but the 2229 came with an aquarium I bought years ago. I have never had a problem with the 2229, and all three baskets are full eheim biological media.
