Hmm...I was paying more attention to looking for the color temp I didn't even consider the wattage. 85 watts is quite a lot to be putting in an incandescent socket in one of those AGA or AGA-type strip lights, if that's what you're planning on doing. I've put 2 40W bulbs in one of those fixtures, but I've never tried anything more than 40W. What are you putting this bulb in, Steve?

They make special "mogul" sockets for these as well as "step down" sockets so they should screw into a regular socket. These bulbs are also available from hydroponic places in 125W and 250W and even have reflectors available! After talking with John Crowder about all the ways to DIY things for our hobby and save money, I'm trying to think outside the "aquarium" box.... To compare the light output (lumens) difference between bulbs, look for the number of lumens. The higher the number of lumens the more light output. Also the temperature of the light affects the color of the emitted light. Lower temperature the color shifts to the red or warmer light. Higher temperature the whiter the light. sunrise

Bulb should work but a lot of light is lost because of the shape of the bulb.

Whatever reflectors you put on there can't get most of that lighting back down into the tank.

But again, it will work.

steve that reflector you posted looks like it should put the light where you want it when you go to get one,two or three ask them to demo it for you then you should know for sure
scott
ps i would go with the mogul if that what the lamp has on it and not use a step down added connection is added heat shorter lifespan
