  • How do I prepare Lava Rock

I just purchased almost 100 pounds of lava rock to use in my aquarium. I have read of various ways to prepare it (boil it, bleach it, etc.) and was just wondering what you guys think? It's a lot of rock to boil so I am leaning towards the bleaching method. I have a couple 18 gal plastic tubs that I could soak it in but not sure how much bleach, how long, etc.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    T.

From where did you get it? That could make a difference on how you go about cleaning it.

you could always pour boiling water over them once in the tub

I would probably just give them a good spray with a garden hose (not one that's been left out in the yard, though) and sprayer nozzle to dislodge any dirt/leaves/bugs/etc. Nepco's a good place! The only reason I would bleach or boil rocks would be if they came from another aquarium and I didn't want to transfer algae or any other yucky things into my tank.

Well I ended up hitting them with the hose and then boiling them anyway.

Anyone know where to get white PFS on the southside anywhere?

Here's a few that might be closer, since your location says Seabrook. :)

Thanks Everyone!! Got the tank set up with my lava from Nepco and my sand from Leslies. I have another question about water clarity but will post a new thread to get opinions.

                  Thanks again!!

I prepared my 30 bags of lava rock for my pond filter by cutting open one end of each bag and dumping contents into the filter tub. I used some red and some black as Home Depot didn't have enough bags of either color.
