  • Heating

This may seem like an odd question, but I've had issues with things like this in the past (one room too hot, one with a failed heater in the winter). . .

What do you do to heat or cool your tanks when it's really hot in Texas. Do you run them just for the cooler months?

I'm thinking once I set up the first tank, I'll monitor it without a heater for a couple of days to see how it fluctuates.

I believe I only have a heater on 1 of my tanks right now, and even that's not necessary - just a leftover from when that tank used to be by a window in my apartment, which wasn't too insulating.

When we're gone during the day, we usually turn the AC up to about 74, and it's usually set at about 70 when we're home. That way during the summer months the tanks don't get too hot.

I wouldn't worry too much about heaters once you move down here. That's a perk we southerners have! I keep one around, though, in case of ich and other things that require a heater. Otherwise, they're a bit obsolete, IMO.

I keep African cichlids and I unplug all my heaters in the summer, temp on inside tanks is about 80 degrees.

That's what I figured. Mine have been off up here for about a week, and they're holding steady at about 75 degrees.

January and Febraury are about the only time I use them, and that is mostly because of the large waterchanges I do and need the temperature back up following.

Hey.. we have it cold here... I mean there are a few nights each year where it gets to be below 32.. I mean a hard freeze for us is when it gets to be like 28. I am sure you have seen far worse.. and wait for it.. it snows only a few days each decade in Houston.

My discus tank is the only one that has a heater running all year. In the winter I set the T-stat at 68 so I run heaters in my tanks all winter.
