Do you think a new layer of gravel will upset a tank? I want to add about 1 inch of a different color gravel to my well established (4 years old) tank, But I dont want to shock the system. I cant think of how it would but just want some opinions.

I think I've done worse to my tanks than putting in an inch of new gravel. I'd go ahead and do it if I were you. :)Fish are people too, they just have gills. -
Depending on the substrate you already have, it could possibly kill off any nitrifying bacteria in the current substrate. I'd keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite for a couple days after you add the new gravel.

Make sure the gravel is not too hot or too cold before putting it in as it could temp change the water.Fishtafarian- Fish are more than just a hobby, they are an obsession.
