So I know it's common practice to buy peat for filters when you are looking to lower the hardness of your water. Peat also adds tannins and other important chemicals that replicate natural conditions. Rather than purchasing the expensive filter packs, would it be possible to add regular garden peat into a fine mesh filter bag? I have Sphagnum peat just lying around the house waiting for my next gardening venture. It seems like a cheap alternative if it actually works.

Yes you can use garden peat but make sure its not fertilized. HGC sells their brand I think its like $5-$10 a bag for a large bag and its all organic. I think the HD brands are all enriched with ferts and other chemicals. So just be careful. Also if you are doing a lot then it doesnt do anything. I had a 2260 full of it running on a 300G tank and it didnt make a dent I would have needed a lot more but I didnt want to mess with the amount I needed to change the pH and hardness so I opted for RO/DI instead. Even cheaper in the long run.
