  • Filter Allocation

I have several filters for two tanks. What is the best combination of filters in your opinion.
Tank 1-110 gal tall for Discus
Tank 2-110 gal long for future Trophs. (currently peacocks)

    Filters:
Wet/Dry home made 30 gal with 950 gph pump
    Fluval FX5 flow 925gph
    Fluval 404 flow 340 gph
    Eheim 2217 flow 264 gph
    Eheim 2215 flow 164 gph

    My thoughts are Tank 1- Wet/dry and 2217 Tank 2- FX5 and 2215 keep 404 as backup/ spare

    110 gal Tall (Angel Community)
    29 gal (Planted Puffer)
10 gal (snails and small planted)
    5 gal Hex (shrimp)

I would go with the following :

Tank 1-110 gal tall for Discus
    Eheim 2217 flow 264 gph
    Eheim 2215 flow 164 gph

Tank 2-110 gal long for future Trophs.

Wet/Dry home made 30 gal with 950 gph pump
    Fluval FX5 flow 925gph

This will give you great biological filtration from the Wet/Dry....and the FX5 is an excellent mechanical filter . Plus, you'll have over 10x "filter turn-over" with this set-up . The only thing I would add is maybe a Koralia 1400 or K4.

Agree with Dave 100%, both eheims for the discus tank and w/d and fx5 for the trophs.

I have power heads for the Troph tank already, i just did not include in list since it is not true filtration. Is the 2215 and 2217 enough filtration for the discus???? I thought they required cleaner water than the Trophs? Plan to do weekly water changes on doth tanks. Thanks for input.

Another wrench thrown in...... What if I wanted Trohs in both tanks? (trying to talk my wife out of discus)

I'm assuming that both tanks are 5' ft. ? If so , then I would just add the following to the second Troph tank :

            Fluval 404 flow 340 gph
            Eheim 2217 flow 264 gph
            Eheim 2215 flow 164 gph

Or you could sell the Eheim 2215 and Fluval 404 and buy you a big filter like another FX5 or Eheim 2260/2262 . Add the new big filter to the existing Eheim 2217 and you should be good to go .

Supadave, One tank is 4ft and tall the other is 5 foot.
I like your thought on selling to get different filter. May consider sell 404 and 2215 for a wet/dry. This way both have a wet dry and mechanical.
