  • freshwater nano filters

Hey all! I've been thinking that for my Fluval Flora 7.9 gallon planted tank, the simple internal sponge filter that comes with the setup is probably not optimal filtration. I've looked at the smaller HOB filters but having a well-fitted glass lid probably precludes the use of HOB filters. Is there any sort of more complete internal filtration system that you guys have personal experience with? I just discovered I have the option of buying a separate carbon insert for my current filter. Or is internal filtration pretty much useless (except to build up beneficial bacteria and for mechanical filtration)?

First small tank = many, many questions.

    Thanks guys.

I have the ebi and have added various media to the filter to increase the bio-filtration.

One thing I have done is to add the the inserts from a small aquaclear filter.
    30Long: L134 Leopard Frog Plecos X16, Corydoras Sterbai X9, Endlers X4

Small ADA nano (~8gal): ... BKK or OEBT breeding tank in the works!

So all that was able to fit? Did you end up taking out most of the sponge?

How I currently have the filter setup is:
        1. Long skinny sponge that comes with filter in its original compartment.
        2. I replaced the two larger sponges with different media. In the large compartment I have: those cylinderical biofilter things, a portion of larger sponge that I cut to about 1/2", homemade carbon insert, filterfloss. In that order.

Water is super clear, and my shrimp have no problem. However I did just get an 2213 for this tank, so we'll see. :)

TEXSUN-- awesome. I'm gonna give that a try later this week (after payday ).

SUNKEN-- you're quite the comedian this morning. $550 plus shipping?! Anyway, I can't do a canister filter right now since I don't have a place to put the canister with my current setup. Update: RCS are doing okay, a little sluggish though. Do they do ok with 78-80 degree temps?

delivery ADG is in Houston you can pick it up... Problem solved..

PM Justin at Custom Aquarium Cabinets he can build you a custom stand... Problem solved

Temp should be ok.. I keep mine at 76 to 78 degrees...

They haven't been in your tank very long so they are probably just being cautious. And you do have fish in there so...

Custom stand... $$. That crazy filter from ADG... $$$. I'll stick to tweaking the current filter for now and see where that gets me. Water parameters with my current maintenance are wonderful, so it's just something I'm doing cuz the fish person in me thinks I should. :)

If water parameters are good then no need to change...

I have both the ADA filter and the custom clear stand and they are worth every penny. That being said, a zoo med nano511 canister filter will be pefect for your setup. If you want one, just let me know. I know I have one sitting around. Look up the reviews and you will see why its a good investment. Good luck.

Thanks. I did read about it and it sounds great. I have very, very little room around the setup though. Looked for dimensions of the nano511 online and couldn't find them. How big is it?

oh look another thread to resurrect! I am looking to replace the internal filter that came with my marineland half moon 10 aquarium and have found a few candidates suitable for a planted tank (so no splashy types). The Fluval U3 internal (~45$) looks promising and has multiple outlet combinations and expandable media baskets. The Fluval Nano Ebi internal (~20$) is cheap but the U3 looks like a better choice. The Aquatop IFE30 internal (~40$) has the same things that I like in the U3 plus you can adjust the outlet flowrate and it has a separate surface skimmer. The ZooMed Nano511 canister (~70$) looks great but appears to be large and is pricey. The turtle 511 may be the same thing and is cheaper but idk if it’s exactly the same. The Aqua Inspiration EX120 canister (~60$) looks to be an outstanding choice if you could buy it somewhere. The Finnex PX 360 canister (~40) appears to be a good value with good construction and it is a hang on back unit. The Rapids Mini canister (~30) appears to be of cheap build quality and, as its only 10 bucks less than the Finnex, not really an option. I like the Fluval U3 and Aquatop for internals. Internals are safer if leaks are a consideration but take up valuable tank space. I like the Aqua Inspiration and Finnex canisters but they need to be built well enough not to leak on my dresser top. Does anyone have opinions on these?

is that for sale in the US? I only see stores listing it in germany....i am kinda looking for one with a spray bar so i can separate the input and output to opposite sides of the tank. the current internal filter just seems to recycle its own output
